Brandy Sachs has been suffering from RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) for over a decade now. Most recently pursuing her Master's Degree at the University of Pittsburgh, Brandy was forced to leave mid semester because the pain became too intense to cope with. It was a horrible situation and even more heartbreaking that she was only 22 with her entire life still ahead of her. In October 2008, Brandy went to Germany for a new type of medical treatment for RSD. The procedure involves placing the patient into a ketamine-induced coma, and is not available in the United States. When she awoke from the coma, Brandy was RSD-pain free and could take a few steps. Now that she has completed several months of physical therapy and follow-up treatments, she is walking a little (with crutches) and is starting to do many of the things she could do before she was struck with this horrible disorder. The parents of Brandy (Gordy and Lisa Sachs) established this website as a method to communicate to family, friends, and others to pass along information that a trust fund was established to raise enough money to pay for the medical treatment she received and continues to receive, much of which is not covered by insurance. In 2008 alone, Brandy’s out-of-pocket medical expenses not covered by insurance were $46,058.25. As of May 15, 2009, the Brandy Nichole Sachs Trust had raised $35,814.35 of the $50,000.00 goal. We are all very appreciative of the generosity of all of those who have donated to the trust fund. There is still a long road of recovery ahead; your continued support is also appreciated. At the top of this page, you will find information about RSD, Ketamine, and also how to DONATE to help towards continuing treatment for Brandy. There is also a link to a blog that provided day-by-day updates on Brandy during her treatment in Germany, and periodic updates since then. |
